SeaFoam’s carbon-storing, seaweed-based building insulation replaces high-GHG-emitting conventional alternatives, turning one of the planet's most carbon-intensive industries into a major climate solution.
Construction materials currently account for 13% of global greenhouse gas emissions. During the coming decades we need to dramatically decrease our carbon emissions, and draw carbon out of the atmosphere. During the same time frame, global construction is anticipated at a pace equivalent to building of all the buildings in New York City every month, for the next 40 years.
Co-founded by Chloe Doesburg (Toronto) and Amy Yang (BC), SeaFoam aims to turn the construction industry -currently one of the planet’s biggest emittersinto a carbon drawdown solution. We bring together our construction expertise and our passion for regenerative carbon solutions to tackle this challenge. With carbon-storing seaweed-based insulation, we can turn buildings into massive carbon sinks.
Seaweed can draw carbon out of the atmosphere faster than any plant, and restores marine ecosystems as it grows. It can do all this without use of freshwater, or land degradation, all while providing sustainable livelihoods for fragile coastal communities. Self-binding, non-toxic, and naturally fire- and rot-resistant, seaweed’s unique properties make it an ideal insulation material, turning the $60-billion dollar global insulation market into a highly scalable carbon draw-down opportunity.
We have developed a circular approach, using waste-products from other industries, to create positive environmental, economic and social impacts all along the value chain, from coastline to construction site.
At SeaFoam, we’re not just insulating buildings, we’re building a regenerative future to address the climate emergency head-on.
