From Idea to Marketplace

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic causing disruptions to business and the economy, in the 2019-20 year, Ryerson was able to support its researchers with the filing of 36 new invention disclosures and nine patent applications. Identifying new knowledge and novel technologies for commercialization not only amplifies the work of Ryerson researchers, it also has potential benefits to Canada’s society and economy.

Atefeh Mashatan (Information Technology Management) is working jointly with Ripple, a Silicon Valley-based provider of enterprise blockchain solutions, to develop Mosaïque, a digital wallet for the real estate industry, which runs predominantly on paper-based processes that are time-consuming, error-prone, and invite fraudulent activity. The platform also has potential use in supply chain provenance, insurance claims, vehicle registry and health care treatment plans.

Bo Tan (Aerospace Engineering) and Krishnan Venkatakrishnan (Mechanical and Industrial Engineering) filed a patent for a COVID-19 test kit that has the potential to cut the test time down to two minutes and could be used by non-technical personnel in a non-lab setting, making mass screenings at public premises such as airports, schools, and stadiums a possibility. NeuronicWorks Inc., a leading company in electronic device design, is developing a commercial version of the device.
