The story follows the character of Segismundo, a prince who has been imprisoned his entire life by his father, the King of Poland, because of a prophecy that he will become a cruel ruler. When Segismundo is released from his prison and given a taste of power, he struggles with the idea of whether his life is a dream or reality, and whether he has the power to change his fate or is doomed to fulfill the prophecy.
