Performance at The Creative School presents Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca’s final work, The House of Bernada Alba, completed in 1936 on the eve of the Spanish Civil War. Matriarch Bernarda Alba, decrees eight years of mourning for her five daughters, mother and household following the death of her second husband. Everyone in the house is confronted with isolation, sexual and physical suppression, misogyny and cruelty. The family is confined to a home where it is criminal to dream, love, imagine ~ where there is no freedom or personal choice. Bernarda’s iron fist eventually leads to tragedy. Lorca’s remarkable piece of theatrical poetry is a provocative reflection of a period of great social unrest where passion and life force fight for expression. Lorca was executed two months after completing the play. His art, homosexuality and left-leaning ideas deemed punishable by death by fascist forces. “I Will Not stay in this house and watch these women turn to dust”.
