Tanya Evidente, MA, joined Toronto Metropolitan University in 2014 and has served as Associate Professor in the School of Performance (The Creative School) since 2019. She has also served as Associate Chair of Performance, teaches classical and contemporary ballet technique, directs rehearsals, and researches ballet practice and theory.
Tanya began her dance training at Toronto Dance Theatre, completed her formal ballet training at Canada’s National Ballet School, and furthered her study at Prodanza in Havana, Cuba. She danced professionally under the artistic directorships of James Kudelka and Karen Kain at the National Ballet of Canada and Alicia Alonso at Ballet Nacional de Cuba, alongside company tenure with La Joven Guardia, Ballet Ciutat de Barcelona, and Ballet Jörgen. Her performance repertoire includes classical masterworks like Giselle, La Bayadère, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote; James Kudelka’s Swan Lake, The Four Seasons, Cinderella, Désir, Cruel World; and George Balanchine works such as Serenade, Agon, Theme and Variations, Symphony in C, among others.
Tanya holds an MA in Dance from York University. A former board member of the World Dance Alliance Americas, her scholarship has been published by Oxford University Press, Dance Collection Danse, and The Dance Current; she also regularly presents her research at conferences across North America. In addition to maintaining an active partnership with Canada's National Ballet School, she serves on the board of Côté Danse, where she collaborates with artistic director Guillaume Côté in an ongoing creative partnership with the School of Performance Dance Program at The Creative School.
