Google Forms Introduces Native Response Limits

February 10, 2026

Google has officially announced a highly requested update to Google Forms, introducing built-in tools to automatically stop accepting responses. For years, users had to rely on third-party add-ons or manual monitoring to close a form; now, these controls are integrated directly into the platform.

Automated Expirations and Quotas

The update provides form owners and editors with two primary ways to manage data collection without constant supervision:

  • Submission Limits: You can set a maximum number of entries. Once the cap is reached, the form automatically stops accepting new responses.
  • Scheduled Deadlines: You can set a specific date and time for the form to close. This is particularly useful for event registrations, timed applications, or classroom assignments.

How to Enable Native Response Limits

This feature is turned off by default. To activate or deactivate it for any form, follow these steps:

  1. Open your form in Google Forms.
  2. Navigate to the Publish button at the top right of the editor.
  3. Under Accepting responses, you can click on Set close date or response limit link.
  4. Look for the new Stop accepting responses options:

    • On a date: Toggle this on and select your desired deadline from the calendar and clock picker.
    • After a number of responses: Toggle this on and enter the maximum number of submissions allowed.
  5. You can enter custom message to send to responder or leave default message.
  6. To Turn Off: Simply return to this menu and toggle the switches back to the "Off" position.
