About

A world class design school with a strong future vision

Create inspiring spaces for an equitable and sustainable future

Ontario’s most highly recognized and successful interior design program, SID’s Bachelor of Interior Design helps students gain an understanding of technological, aesthetic, ideological, environmental, cultural and social dimensions of the built environment. Accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), the program’s graduates are industry leaders dedicated to the development of equitable and sustainable spaces. Started in 1948, the School has earned widespread industry respect due to the accomplishments of faculty and alumni.

SID's teaching is grounded in a commitment to experiential and hands-on learning. An internship requirement, completed before graduation, is an integral part of the preparation for entering the profession. Field trips and opportunities for international exchange enrich the educational experiences possible at the school.

Design School Named Top in the World

Internationally respected Azure magazine named SID one of the leading interior design schools on the planet alongside Parsons The New School for Design in New York City and the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, among others. One hundred international architects, interior designers, industrial designers and other practitioners weighed in: "Toronto Met dominates the discussion about the best interior design school in Canada, and graduates are equipped with the necessary technical skills to hit the ground running when they leave school."

Our Mission

SID's mission follows from our core values of making, leading, challenging and caring. Our mission is:

  • To educate the leaders in the next generation of interior designers;
  • To challenge the norms of interior design education;
  • To lead through scholarship, research and creative activities;
  • To champion the role of making in the construction of interior environments; and
  • To care for ourselves, for others, and for the world.

Pedagogic Considerations

Teaching at SID starts from a place of caring. Our objective is not so much to focus on content, or even on skills, but rather to help the development of our students into strong, confident, and successful leaders. Faculty are encouraged to see students as colleagues from day one, to understand that we are working together to make a new world.

Design projects are based on real-world problems and contemporary issues. Students learn how to use cutting-edge technology to develop their creative ideas and produce functional and inspiring solutions. An immersive environment allows our interior design students to absorb the terminology, marketplace and professional issues of practice, while an experiential curriculum emphasizes both studio and workshop to stimulate creativity, experimentation, problem solving and innovation.

Student develop your expertise in advanced design software including 3D rendering, virtual reality and environmental simulation. SID makes use of a world-leading digital fabrication facility as well as traditional woodworking shops, ceramics facilities, and a materials library specifically curated for interior design.

Academic learning is coupled with real-world experience and connections through internship opportunities with leading interior designers, and enriched experiences through  field trips, volunteer placements, design competitions, public lectures, symposia, and exhibitions. SIDs students collaborate with students across The Creative School and beyond, and gain a broader perspective through The Creative School’s summer intensive in Cortona, Italy, or spend a semester studying abroad on an exchange with one of our many university partners.

SID starts from a position of care. Utilizing the user experience and basing our design and placemaking on the subject, we create meaningful spaces that support human and sometimes non-human activity. Sustainability, equity and emerging technologies all work to shape our approach to interior design. Through careful consideration of human contexts and cultural practices, our we challenge students at all levels of our programs to make great spaces and to become leaders.
