Robert Schauer, Business Management ’97, shares insights from his decades-long career in finance — from lessons in leadership to practical tips on building financial confidence.

Across a career spanning more than 25 years, Robert Schauer, Business Management ’97, has navigated Canada’s finance sector with a focus on leadership, adaptability and helping others build financial security. He is head of business transformation, North America, at BMO Global Asset Management, and chief financial officer, investment funds, overseeing operations that support investors and drive strategic change.

From TMU to a career in finance

Schauer’s path into finance began while he was studying business at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Encouraged by a friend to pursue becoming a chartered accountant, he gained early experience at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), exploring a range of industries before finding a home in asset management.

“The asset management industry resonated with my values in helping others build financial security for their futures,” he said. “Whether it be saving for their children’s education, buying a house or ensuring a comfortable retirement, I knew this work could make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.”

TMU also shaped the way he approaches challenges and opportunities. Professors prepared him for the Uniform Final Examination (UFE) — the final professional exam required at the time to become a chartered accountant in Canada, now known as the Common Final Examination (CFE) — and exposed him to skills such as statistics, financial modelling and economic history. Additionally, working on assignments with classmates from different walks of life further honed his problem-solving and collaboration skills, providing technical and interpersonal tools he would later rely on in leadership roles.

Leadership, adaptability and financial literacy

Over the years, Schauer has faced moments that tested both his judgment and leadership. Crises such as the September 11 attacks in 2001 and the 2008 global financial downturn reinforced the need for thoughtful decision-making and flexibility.

“Being self-aware and adaptable allows you to take advantage of opportunities quickly that others may miss by being too rigid in their thinking,” he said. “The future changes quickly. To be successful, you must embrace change and look for opportunities to listen and learn about trends, risks and innovation.”

To mark November being Financial Literacy Month, Schauer shared some practical guidance for Canadians: “Start early. In investing, time is your ally. Read and invest in yourself by understanding the options for investing and budgeting. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

Beyond his work at BMO, Schauer is a past recipient of TMU’s Alumni Achievement Award and the G. Raymond Chang Outstanding Volunteer Award. He serves on the board of directors for BMO Investments Inc., is chairman of the BMO Monthly Dividend Fund Ltd., and has held leadership roles in key industry associations, including CPA Canada’s Investment Fund Standing Committee and the Canadian ETF Association. His commitment to leadership also extends into the community, including past service on the board of Turning Point Youth Services.

Schauer’s career demonstrates how technical expertise, adaptability and a focus on helping others can create meaningful impact. From guiding investment operations to supporting financial literacy, he continues to provide lessons in leadership, resilience and the importance of planning for the future.
