Self Leadership Coach

Catherine Lash has enjoyed three fulfilling entrepreneurial careers since graduating from university — documentary photographer, wedding industry community builder and now, self-leadership coach. She generously shared some insights on entrepreneurship, advice for living with courage, trust in oneself and how her Ryerson University experience influenced the path she’s taken.

Why did you choose to study at TMU?

I chose TMU because at the time it was a Polytechnic Institute, offering hands on courses such as photography which I knew I would have greater success in.

It just so happened the year I applied, the university was offering a first year, three-month intensive photography program in P.E.I. I could complete my first year in the summer months and go directly into second year that September. I knew this would be an incredibly unique learning opportunity and once in a lifetime experience, luckily, I got in.

How did your degree influence your career choices?

My entire experience at TMU influenced my career choices, including the instructors and the other students in the program. My eyes were opened to all the options in my chosen field that I would never have seen if I had ventured out on my own.

What are some skills you developed through university that have assisted you in your life/career?

I came to understand what it meant to belong to a community of diverse thinkers and creative individuals. It was inspiring to see how others viewed the world through photography.

What advice would you offer students and recent graduates embarking on careers in creative industries?

Dedicate time to finding your purpose. Make sure you wake up every day with your cause top of mind so you can live your best life.

In your experience, what are some attributes of individuals who are most successful as entrepreneurs?

Those who work towards a cause bigger than themselves.

What have your career pivots taught you and what suggestions would you offer to someone seeking the courage to try something new?

You must make sure you are always speaking to the right audience. If you have outgrown your audience, it is important to take responsibility for yourself and be courageous enough to make a change when the need arises.

Where are you working now and what does a typical day in your work life look like?

I work for myself and have since I graduated from TMU. My days are spent refining and facilitating a workshop I have designed to help individuals clarify their purpose and take responsibility for their potential.

What are the best parts of your work; what are the necessary evils?

The best part of my job is driven by the desire to make an impact. The difficult part, as with many solopreneurs, is it can be lonely. It is important to find your community and the right audience for you.

What career achievement are you most proud of and why?

I am currently in my third career, each one has been extremely fulfilling. As a wedding photographer I brought documentary wedding photography into the mainstream. In my second career, I reimagined the wedding industry and built a strong supportive community, which included managing a trade show. Currently, I host workshops for individuals seeking to find and define their cause and purpose.

What I am most proud of over the years is always trusting myself to know when it is time to change and having the courage to do so.

What do you wish you could tell your university self?

Take time to discover your purpose or cause. There is nothing more exciting than being in full control of your potential and using it to make a positive impact on someone else’s life.

What is your favourite university memory or take away from your time here?

Best thing that happened to me on TMU campus was I met my husband Stephen Bulger!
