Overview

In 2021 Prof. Chan has been named Fellow of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario, external link, opens in new window (external link)  (FCPA), the highest honour the accounting profession bestows, for his lifetime achievement and outstanding contributions to the profession and community. The distinction was conferred on only 57 of the organization’s more than 97,000 members in 2021, recognizing CPAs who have demonstrated exceptional performance in three fields of activity: professional career, volunteer involvement within the accounting profession and volunteer contribution to professional, community or charitable organizations.

Prof. Chan is a seasoned researcher, award-winning teacher, community servant-leader. He participated in the World Bank-KPMG Consulting Project to develop a training curriculum for the National Accounting Institute in the People's Republic of China. He served as an External Assessor for the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) to evaluate research grants applications in 2007-2012 and in 2018.

On community services, Prof. Chan served as a member of the Training, Colleges and Universities Policy Advisory Council in Ontario, Canada in 2001-2003 to advise the Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities on long-term policies and current issues on post-secondary education in Ontario, Canada. The Council had meetings once a month in the legislative building. He had also been a member of the Council's Accountability Committee.

Prof. Chan hosted a weekly radio program on Fairchild Radio (the largest multicultural radio station for the Chinese community in Canada) in 1998-2001and in 2005. He also wrote a weekly column on Sing Tao Daily (a leading Chinese newspaper in Canada) in 1998-2002 and in 2005-2006. He is frequently invited as speaker for meetings of charity and professional organizations and as commentator in multicultural TV and radio news programs. He was President of Toronto Chinese Writers Association (2010-2012), and is an honorary advisor and board director of not-for-profit social service organizations. He received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award, Canada in 2011, and the Toronto Chinese Media Award, Canada in 2012.
