About Independent Electricity System Operator

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is a Crown corporation in Ontario, Canada, responsible for ensuring a reliable, efficient, and sustainable electricity system across the province:

System Operation & Market Management

  • Manages the real-time operation of Ontario’s bulk electrical system, balancing supply and demand minute-by-minute
  • Oversees the province’s competitive wholesale electricity market.

Planning & Coordination

  • Conducts short- and long-term planning to forecast demand, secure appropriate electricity supply, and support grid evolution
  • Collaborates with municipalities, Indigenous communities, and transmission/distribution organizations to modernize the grid and support infrastructure needs

Conservation & Efficiency

  • Promotes energy conservation and demand management programs (e.g., through Save on Energy) to help reduce strain on the grid

Governance & Independence

  • Established in 1999 (initially as the Independent Electricity Market Operator) and rebranded to IESO in 2005. It's governed by an arms-length board appointed by the Ontario government and regulated by the Ontario Energy Board

In essence, the IESO is the steward of Ontario’s electricity reliability, market operations, and strategic planning—ensuring that the province has the power it needs, when it needs it, now and into the future.
