About Hazelview

Hazelview is a leading Canadian real estate asset manager with a focus on multi-residential (apartments). The firm was founded in 1999 by two co-founders who teamed up to buy a single apartment building and has scaled from there. Today the firm has a large presence in both the public and private real estate markets, managing billions of dollars across multiple funds for endowments, pensions, and high net worth individuals. While the majority of our assets under management are dedicated to real estate private equity, we do also have a public securities. Our public securities team is global in scope with offices and investment professionals in Canada, New York, Hamburg, and Hong Kong. We focus on managing portfolios of listed real estate securities (REITs) with an aim towards outperforming our relevant benchmark across both short and long-term horizons.

About Kyle Yancan

I began my journey as a student at TMU in 2012. At the time I did not have a strong idea of what I wanted to do but eventually gravitated towards finance & accounting, choosing to major in finance. While at the school I made numerous lifelong friends (including Felix!), some of whom introduced me to the student investment group formerly known as RIG (Ryerson Investment Group, now I believe known as TRIC – Ted Rogers Investment Council). After attending an open session and seeing the quality of work on display by current members I applied to join and was admitted in my second year, staying involved in the group throughout my time at the university and eventually becoming the CIO. Outside of my involvement in the student group, I worked part-time as a tutor for the introductory year 1 finance courses out of the tutoring center in the TRSM building. I found this quite enjoyable as teaching it to others forced me to become more proficient in my understanding of the concepts. I was able to parlay my experience at TRIC into a third-year junior analyst internship at RBC in early 2016, taking a semester off school to pursue the opportunity. This turned into a full year away from school as following the end of my internship I was put in touch with someone on RBC’s equity sales desk looking for a fill-in for someone on maternity leave. I spent another 6 months here coordinating management roadshows and essentially running logistics, which wasn’t what I wanted to do but gave me a lot of valuable experience. I finally ended up graduating in 2017 and shortly thereafter went to work with Felix at Hazelview.
