August 27, 2025 (Toronto, ON) - The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University (opens in new window)  is pleased to announce the appointment of award-winning comedian, actor, writer, and showrunner Carolyn Taylor (external link, opens in new window)  as Writer in Residence for the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Scriptwriting & Story Design (opens in new window) . Taylor’s appointment to the MFA program brings an exciting new chapter to the program, where she will mentor and teach graduate students, collaborate on community-facing programming, and serve as an ambassador for the unique interdisciplinary program.

“I’m thrilled to have Carolyn join the MFA program! She has a rare combination of comedic brilliance, creative risk-taking, and storytelling depth that really resonates with our students. She’s a generous collaborator and a natural mentor, and we’re so excited for the energy and insight she’s bringing to the MFA program. Her collaborative spirit and cross-platform experience will be invaluable as we continue to nurture bold, original voices within the MFA in Scriptwriting & Story Design,” said Michael Coutanche, Program Director, MFA in Scriptwriting & Story Design at The Creative School, TMU.

A celebrated Canadian comedian, Carolyn Taylor is best known as one of the creators, executive producers, and stars of the critically acclaimed Baroness von Sketch Show (CBC, IFC), which received widespread praise from The New York Times, IndieWire, and Vogue. The show earned over 20 awards, including Canadian Screen Awards for Best Sketch Show/Series and Best Writing, as well as international honours such as two Rockies Awards, a Rose d’Or, and the Rogers Prize for Excellence in Canadian Content. Most recently, she created and starred in I Have Nothing (Crave, 2023, Peacock, 2025), a hit quixotic figure-skating docu-comedy that earned her a 2024 Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Lead Performer in a Comedy.

“I’m absolutely thrilled and honoured to be joining The Creative School at TMU as Writer-in-Residence for the 2025/26 school year. It will be my first time working with graduate students in the classroom, but trust that with the right turtleneck and corduroy blazer, I should command the authority necessary for the role,” said Carolyn Taylor, Comedian, Writer, and Showrunner.

A long-time collaborator and improviser, Taylor honed her satirical skills at The Second City, where she wrote and performed in five original mainstage revues and won four Canadian Comedy Awards. She has written for This Hour Has 22 Minutes (CBC) and appeared in several series such as Workin’ Moms, Detention Adventure, and Ghosts. Her upcoming projects reflect her boundary-pushing approach to storytelling, from Black Mirror (Netflix, 2025) and Wayward (Netflix, 2025) to an experimental queer pop album, The Untitled Carolyn Taylor Project (2025).

Housed in The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University, the MFA in Scriptwriting & Story Design is a unique, interdisciplinary graduate program that immerses students in script-based writing for screen, stage, and emerging media platforms. The program fosters bold voices and diverse perspectives from Canada’s leading creative faculties, including Image Arts, Performance and RTA School of Media.
