The Image Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University (external link)  welcomed scholars, curators, archivists, and computer scientists from around the world for Encoding the Image (external link) , a three-day symposium exploring how artificial intelligence is transforming the field of photo history. The sold-out event, held from March 31 to April 2, 2025, spotlighted emerging approaches to archival access, digitization, and visual research. Organized by Image Arts professor, Dr. Thierry Gervais, in partnership with pictorIA and High Vision, the program combined keynote lectures, panel discussions, and off-site visits to foster interdisciplinary dialogue. Each day offered a distinct focus to guide participants through the evolving relationship between AI and photographic scholarship. For students and professionals alike, Encoding the Image offered a rare opportunity to engage with the future of image-based research in real time.
