Master of Digital Media student explores tech solutions for overcoming foreign language anxiety
As part of her MDM major research project (MRP), Fatemeh Hemmatipour focuses on leveraging Virtual Reality (VR) technology to simplify people's lives with foreign language anxiety. When individuals feel stressed or anxious when speaking a language other than their native tongue, they go through foreign language anxiety. This becomes an issue with how they communicate with others and navigate a society that speaks a language different from theirs.
Hemmatipour, a graphic designer from Iran and a Master of Digital Media student, worked on a research project focusing on how to tackle this issue. Hemmatipour's paper proposes designing an immersive virtual reality (VR) platform that simulates real-life interactive scenarios like ordering at a cafe or restaurant or checking into a hotel, to alleviate anxiety.

"VR provides an immersive, real-world environment where learners can practice language skills at their own pace without the fear of judgment, increasing their confidence and proficiency, " Hemmatipour said, praising how accessible and flexible VR platforms can be. "The personalized nature of VR allows for tailored learning experiences, while immediate feedback mechanisms help identify and correct mistakes in real-time."
Enhancing learning with emerging technology and innovative methods
In her research, Hemmatipour uses technology and innovative methods to address language learning anxiety. Specifically, she used the Pimsleur method, a technique developed by Dr. Paul Pimsleur that centers around audio-based language learning, emphasizing listening and speaking skills.
In this project, I aim to enhance the method by incorporating visuals, which can aid in checking grammar and providing a more comprehensive language learning experience," said Hemmatipour.
The VR technology helped Hemmatipour develop some critical insights into her study. Mainly around what traditional methods lack and how VR technology can help create a personalized learning experience that addresses anxiety.
"VR technology offers a safe, judgment-free environment for learners to practice and speak at their own pace, reducing anxiety and fostering a more supportive and encouraging learning atmosphere," said Hemmatipour.
Now, Hemmatipour has set her sights on learning more about implementing VR technology into education and encouraging its use in schools and other educational institutions.
"To do this, I plan to look into what VR can do, its limits, and what new things have been happening. I'll explore how it's being used in education right now, looking at examples where it has helped students,” she explains. “By understanding how VR is being used, I can explain why it might be a good idea to use it for language learning and in education more generally."
Hemmatipour emphasizes that VR isn't a technology commonly used, and she aims to change that. For those using VR to learn a second language, Hemmatipour advises using all the tools available to enhance learning.
"While enjoying the benefits of VR, be aware of any limits it might have. Adapt your use of VR based on your abilities, and try to overcome any challenges it may pose,” said Hemmatipour. This way, you can maximize the advantages of this innovative technology and make your language learning journey more effective and enjoyable."
