The Creative School expands UK hub with new creative AI course
The Creative School expanded its UK Hub this year with the introduction of a new transdisciplinary course on creative artificial intelligence (AI). Led by Professor Jonathon Anderson, 32 students from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) undertook a two-week immersion in London in July, delving into the city's culture, academia, and creative technology industry.
This initiative was made possible through a new strategic partnership with the University of Westminster, encompassing transatlantic research and creative collaboration. As part of this collaboration, 29 projects created by The Creative School's students, researchers and practitioners in emerging technologies in design, creative, and digital sectors were showcased at the CREATECH International Conference hosted by the University of Westminster in September. The partnership commenced in March with "Connected Creativity: A Transatlantic Exhibition of Practice-Based Research" at the University of Westminster, showcasing the work of four artists involved in practice-based research on both sides of the Atlantic. Among them were Interior Design Professor Jonathon Anderson and Image Arts Professor Alyssa Bistonath.
Exploring AI applications in the creative industries
Students across The Creative School had the opportunity to apply emerging AI technologies to their own individual projects, directly related to their program of study. RTA Media Production student Grace Sun’s project focused on narratives and perspectives. Using AI technologies such as MidJourney and DALLE-2, she decided to reimagine well-known landmarks in London through the eyes of a child.

Although it was Sun’s first time exploring AI programs, she says the course allowed her to focus and immerse herself during the guided two weeks and encouraged her to explore the technology in depth.
“By the end of the intensive, I had delved into brand new technology, made lifelong friends, and explored a new city through an academic lens,” she said. “Throughout the course, I developed an appreciation for how complex emerging technology is. I feel equipped to explore any future technologies I may encounter as a professional.”
Showcasing innovative projects at CREATECH
The CREATECH ‘23 (external link) international conference at the University of Westminster, co-hosted by Jonathon Anderson, Director of the Design + Technology LAB at The Creative School, and Dr. David Scott, Director of the Fabrication Lab at the University of Westminster, brought together researchers, students, practitioners and industry professionals to showcase innovative projects and share ideas on the creative possibilities unlocked by emerging technologies.
29 of the projects showcased at P3 Ambika, a prominent London art gallery, were by faculty, staff, and students from programs across The Creative School — including Fashion, Interior Design, Photography, Film, New Media, and Graphic Communications Management. The projects showcased ranged from full-scale installations to posters.Alongside public exhibitions, the conference also held interactive workshops offering hands-on experience of the technologies and practices being discussed.

“The significance of CREATECH ‘23 revolves around teaching and research through making and provides a platform for open dialogue and exchange,” remarked Anderson. “This approach transcends the boundaries of traditional education and empowers individuals to explore, learn, and innovate in a tangible and experiential manner.”
The Design + Technology LAB at The Creative School and the Fabrication Lab share the common goal of fostering innovation and creativity by putting the technology into the hands of the creatives. This challenges conventional norms that might not be attainable through theoretical exploration alone.
These initiatives with University of Westminster aim to expand The Creative School’s UK hub and aims to cultivate an environment that encourages bold experimentation, taking risks, and pushing boundaries in pursuit of a more innovative and creative future.
