The Creative School mourns the death of Stephen Trumper. A dear colleague in the School of Journalism, Trumper was a veteran journalist and educator who won many national awards and also steered the Review of Journalism for many years at the School.
Trumper joined The Creative School’s School of Journalism as a part-time instructor in the mid-nineties and retired this past April 2022. Over the years, he taught magazine editing and feature writing, helping develop the next generation of long-form journalists in Canada. His passion for journalism was clear through every lesson he taught, both inside and outside the classroom. As a teacher and mentor, Trumper was a wonderful inspiration to many generations of the industry’s brightest journalists.
Over the course of his decades-long career, Trumper was recognized for his writing, editing, teacher and advocacy work for people with disabilities. In 2012, Trumper received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his contributions to the community in public service. In 2013, the National Magazine Awards Foundation awarded Trumper with the Foundation Award for Outstanding Achievement. Working with various publications in the local community, including Toronto Life, National Post Business, Chatelaine and This Magazine, Trumper’s presence in the industry will always be remembered.
In collaboration with Steve's family, the School of Journalism is hosting a memorial service to celebrate Steve's life at 4 p.m. on January 20, 2023. To attend, please register here (external link) .
