A role model for women in broadcasting, Phyllis Switzer was a pioneer and a visionary for the Canadian broadcasting industry.  In 1972, recognizing a need for local programming amidst the mass market targeting of national networks, Ms. Switzer became the co-founder of CITY-TV.  In 1982, she again helped to launch a successful start-up as the Senior Vice-President of Programming for Canada’s first national pay-tv station, First Choice.  What many consider her crowning achievement, though, was her work as the Managing Director of CTV’s Host Broadcast Unit for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games.  Working with the International Olympic Committee and broadcasters from around the world, she organized television coverage of the games that is considered the best TV presentation in Winter Olympics history.  Although she often described herself as “the best No. 2 person around,” her talents and contributions were recognized with numerous awards, including the Broadcast Executive Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award and an Award of Merit from Toronto Women in Film and Video.  Succumbing to cancer in 1989, Ms. Switzer was posthumously inducted into the CAB Broadcast Hall of Fame in 1999.

Ann C. Poochareon, founder, business leader, mother and activist passed away in early 2021 from breast cancer. In her wake, she has left a far-reaching legacy of activism, leadership, and community-building. Ann was dedicated to engaging people through the combination of science and art (STEAM). She began her career in Chicago, graduating with a degree in computer science before moving to New York to attend NYU’s illustrious Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) for her masters. After graduating, Ann co-founded Aesthetec Studio, working on the interactive design of major museums in Thailand, Canada, and the US. Following the birth of her son Oren in 2013, she co-founded Little Robot Friends, an education company focused on creatively teaching children coding, electronics, and digital literacy through accessible activities and workshops. In 2019, she was recognized for her efforts as a recipient of the Government of Canada’s Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund. These accomplishments barely touch on the incredible impact that she had with her colleagues, her community (locally and abroad), and her family. Ann was bold and direct, compassionate and caring. In her limited time with us, her light shone brightly. In her final time battling the disease she was an ardent supporter of young women of color. Her wish was to level the playing field and give support to diverse voices like hers in STEAM fields. This award aims to help her with this wish – to establish a legacy of supporting diverse, strong women.

RTA School of Media faculty member Mark Argo has generously created the Art+Tech Award in memory of his wife, Ann C. Poochareon, who was an ardent supporter of women in media and technology.

When he was a Bay salesman he started a sideline of installing and setting up customers’ tube radios in their homes. Later still, he barnstormed small communities in Western Canada selling radio transmitters to would be station owners. He started the CBC’s Dominion Radio network and then as TV arrived bought syndicated programming for both radio and TV and sold them to stations all across the country. Denied the licence for Toronto’s first private TV station in 1961, he immediately turned around and founded CTV. He loved people, the challenge of selling and liked to make money.” -Jon Keeble
