What's next for Performance: Design and Production grad Alexander MacNaughton?
The performance Design and Production program prepares students with the creative, technical, and leadership skills necessary to produce small to large-scale productions including plays, musicals, dance shows, immersive experiences, AR/ VR, large-scale events, community-engaged artistic projects and more.
Upcoming Design and Production program graduate, Alexander MacNaughton (external link) is ready to continue expanding his costume skills and reflects on the design training he received at TMU.
Describe your time at Performance, what were your favourite classes and what rehearsal projects/performances were you a part of?
Going into Performance I already knew I wanted to be in costuming, so I’m very lucky that Bronwyn & the Wardrobe team at large saw that drive and offered me so many roles around the shop. I’ve gotten to spend every single semester in the TMU wardrobe space, both for shows and for classes like Corsetry and Tailoring, and it truly felt like my home on campus.
I’m especially grateful for the chance to work as a Designer on Attempts on Her Life and 4.48 Psychosis, and as Footwear Coordinator on shows like The Alchemist & RISE 2025, where I got to use materials and techniques that were completely new to me.
Alexander has been constantly making things since his parents bought him a hot pink Bratz™ sewing machine as an eight-year-old.
What are some good memories and your biggest takeaways from your four years?
My favourite memory from my time at Performance has to be performing in ProdCabaret 1 & 2!
In my first year, a whole group of my classmates and I put on a small cabaret show in the last week of classes, just for fun, and it felt so empowering to know that the only thing standing between us and putting on a production was just...deciding to do it.
We finally had the sequel show as part of another student’s (Kirby Rinquinha’s) thesis this year, as the final production our year would do together, and I think every single one of us was crying by the end of bows.
Alexander performs in Prod Cabaret 2.
Is there something you wish you could tell yourself in first year?
Take more photos!!!!!!! Seriously, there are so many times I want to add something to my portfolio, or reference an old project, or just show my family what I did all year, only to find I was so wrapped up in the moment I forgot to document anything.
What is one BIG dream you have for your life after graduation?
I’m at The Banff Centre for the Arts, where I’ve been selected to take part in their 4-week Wardrobe Technician Training Program this year!
I’m also trying to put out as many feelers as I can right now, so I’m in the middle of looking into opening up cosplay commissions, filming my personal projects for social media, and bugging every wardrobe head I can find the email of. Beyond that, I just want to make more art, for as long as I can.
