Biography

Kerry built her first website at the age of 13, at the height of the Internet Explorer/Netscape browser wars and before CSS was in widespread use. After graduating from TMU in 2007 with a degree in newspaper journalism, she spent eight years in various roles at CBC News Online before embarking on the full-time front-end development bootcamp at HackerYou (now Juno College). She spent a year as a full-time developer in the agency world before joining the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as its web manager, a position she held for 6.5 years. Kerry's research interests include web accessibility, live streaming, and the evolution of digital opportunities within journalism and the performing arts.

Why Digital Media?

I was drawn to this program's combination of creative, technological, and business education. After more than 15 years in the workforce, I've observed several potential opportunities to apply my knowledge and skills. I look forward to learning how to cultivate those ideas and shape them into something that can, I hope, make a real impact in the digital world.

Major Research Paper

Hack “Start” to Continue: A Mixed-Method Study of Video Game Hardware Modifications

While modifications (“modding” or “mods”) to video-game software are well documented in academic research, mods to game hardware have received significantly less attention. As a range of hardware-focused practices has given rise to related communities and small businesses, an exploration of such practices is necessary. This paper seeks to outline and contextualize hardware modding through original research illuminating the activities and motivations of hardware modders.
