During my 6 month stay in Málaga from February to July, I was given the chance to connect with people from all over the world and to enjoy new experiences that I’ve never had before.
In terms of social life, Málaga is a vibrant city full of colour, culture, and history. The city houses clubs, bars, and restaurants packed full of people from many different walks of life and from every corner of the globe.
Restaurants such as La Tasquina, La Casa Aranda, or bars like El Colmao, and clubs such as Santa Rita were personal highlights of my time abroad. For example, La Casa Aranda offers a chill patio experience with churros and coffee, all the way to venues such as Santa Rita offering nights out that never seemed to end.
Málaga, as a city and a region, offers many beautiful views and opportunities for sightseeing. The welcoming port of the city, Muelle Uno, is home to many different shops and restaurants and makes for an amazing scenic route. The main beach of the city, the Malagueta, is an amazing third space for anyone to enjoy, with many people going to swim, play beach volleyball, or even just to lounge around with friends.
Some of my best memories in Málaga involve going to the beach just to socialize, and sing songs with friends.
As a student going on an exchange to Málaga, Spain, the LIR program provided me with the necessary insight and skills to excel in new cultural contexts.
Not only did it elevate my Spanish language skills to a high level of proficiency, but it also greatly improved my communication skills with other Spanish speakers. It provided me with the cultural insight to interpret, understand, and appreciate the many ways in which different cultures function.
I would highly recommend going on exchange (even if it's not to Málaga) as there are many benefits to be had such as making new connections, learning a new language, or even just experiencing something new.
