Independent Studies

Our department offers three distinct opportunities for students to further enrich their academic journey: the Independent Research Paper, the Independent Research Project, and Internship credits. These elective courses are designed to provide students with tailored experiences that complement their academic studies and prepare them for their desired future careers. Whether you're keen on delving deep into scholarly research, showcasing your creative and practical skills, or gaining real-world professional experience, our department offers flexible pathways to help you achieve your goals while earning credit for your interests. Explore the unique features of each credit below and discover how they can enhance your educational experience at TMU.

The enrollment process for all three optional credits—Independent Research Paper, Independent Research Project, and Internship—is streamlined to ensure students can embark on their chosen academic endeavors seamlessly.

To begin, students initiate discussions with an English Department faculty member of their choice to explore the chosen paper or project topic.

Following this consultation, students complete the application form, ensuring submission at least two weeks prior to the commencement of classes. Once the application is reviewed and approved, the Undergraduate Administrator (UPA) will facilitate enrollment in the respective course.

It's noteworthy that while the faculty member listed in My Service Hub is the department chair, the course is not directly taught by them; however, they will oversee grade submissions. Throughout the course duration, students are expected to maintain open communication with the UPA and their approved supervisor to navigate the course requirements effectively and trouble shoot any issues that may arise.
