Why did you choose Creative Industries and which modules did you choose?

I found TMU’s School of Creative Industries by accident and liked the opportunity to choose different modules and explore a little bit within the degree. I am a producer, a model, and I’m also a food writer, so I have a lot of different interests. I enjoy having different projects going on at one time, and the program really fit with my desire to keep my options open.

Where are you working now and what do you do in your role?

I work as a Programs Manager and Podcast Producer at the non-profit Glenn Gould Foundation (GGF). In my role, I help with all the programming, including facilitating The Glenn Gould Prize. I also launched and produce a podcast called The Gould Standard, which explores arts of all creative disciplines.

How have you applied what you learned in the program to your professional life?

Creative Industries was probably one of the only programs that could have prepared me for my job. The business focus was essential for me to support with administration and accounting, and having the knowledge to produce a podcast and manage a project from start to finish? That’s all thanks to my Journalism and Storytelling in Media modules. Above all, communication is central to everything, and Creative Industries produces excellent communicators.

What advice would you give to current creative industries students wondering about their professional futures?

I would say to take advantage of the virtual events and programs at your disposal, because that might be what leads you to your next opportunity. Additionally, don’t be afraid of industries or sectors you’re unfamiliar with. There are entirely new needs and priorities surfacing due to COVID, and if you are a person who’s adaptable across both creative and business disciplines, you are going to be the person who is most qualified to fill that gap. This is not going to last forever, so don’t lose hope.
