Edwin Lo
Why did you choose creative industries and which modules did you choose?
I actually made the switch from Ted Rogers School of Management because I wanted both a creative and business focus. Within Creative Industries, I chose the modules Storytelling in Media and Media Business.
Where are you working now and what is your role?
I work at Adidas Canada within the eCommerce and Digital Experience team. I own execution on all things related to hard launches and hype launches (for example, Beyonce x Ivy Park) with our digital and marketing team. I’m also responsible for product analysis for our launches and for enriching customers’ on-site experience.
How have you applied what you learned in the program to your professional life?
My role brings together creative and business practices, and the Creative Industries program helped prepare me to work in both spaces. From communicating with buyers, working with digital content, and analyzing a product’s sell-through rate, I’m able to see the value of the Creative Industries program as it helped me develop different perspectives and skillsets. The company also complimented my diverse educational background and experience when I got the job because they knew having both perspectives would be valuable.
How did you make the most of your undergraduate experience, especially during the pandemic?
I had gotten involved through on-campus jobs and volunteer opportunities throughout my time at Ryerson, but my last year of university was completely virtual and I wanted to make the most of it. So, I joined The Make Collective at the Design Fabrication Zone, and israella KOBLA at the Fashion Zone to gain experience and build my portfolio. Particularly, my work with fashion brand israela KOBLA helped me develop skillsets in fashion, retail, and eCommerce, which I was able to directly apply to my current job. I was also the Vice President of the Ryerson Entertainment Conference, worked on campus as a Content Creator for @RUStudentLife, and was a mentee at The Creative School’s Career Builder Mentorship Program. Getting involved in any way I could kept me motivated, which helped me develop my own professional career goals for post-graduation.
