About Bridging Divides
The Migrant Integration in the Mid-21st Century: Bridging Divides research program is dedicated to building a new understanding of the challenges and opportunities that migrant integration poses for Canada, and all countries, locally and across borders. Bridging Divides (BD) is funded by the Government of Canada through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) (external link) .
Dr. Zhixi Zhuang is the Project Lead for multiple BD projects, including Housing for International Students, Ethnic Diversity and Neighbourhoods, and Suburban Placemaking: Ethnic Retailing, Social Infrastructure and Migrant Well-being. She is a Registered Professional Planner, Associate Professor at the School of Urban and Regional Planning at TMU, founder and director of DiverCity Lab, (external link) and Associate Director for Education and Capacity Building at the Global Migration Institute. Her work explores the intersections of immigrant settlement and integration, urban transformations, and municipal policies and governance, all from a lens of equity, inclusion, and socio-spatial justice.
About the Role
As a Project Coordinator, you will work closely with Dr. Zhuang across multiple projects within Bridging Divides to prepare and deliver impactful research, train and oversee Research Assistants, and manage project progression. The position requires an individual with strong knowledge and research experience in migration studies, a flexible and open mindset, and a collaborative approach. The successful candidate will be highly organized, self-motivated, and driven to conduct impactful migration research and effectively coordinate with peers, collaborators, and stakeholders.
Eligibility
Priority will be given to current PhD students or PhD degree holders in the field of migration studies. Applicants with a Master’s degree in a related field will also be considered, provided they have relevant research experience.
Core Responsibilities
- Project Coordination – Support project planning, scoping, and implementation by tracking actions and deliverables, coordinating logistics for meetings and events, keeping internal processes organized, onboarding, training and monitoring Research Assistants, and keeping team members informed, included and updated.
- Research & Analysis – Conduct literature reviews, environmental scans, and qualitative/ quantitative research to inform project work.
- Writing & Content Development – Assist in drafting manuscripts, reports, presentations, and data visualization (e.g., infographics, maps, diagrams, other visual materials).
- Engagement & Facilitation – Support in-person and online stakeholder engagement activities, including interviews, workshops, and co-design sessions by taking notes, supporting facilitation, managing on-site logistics, stakeholder invitations, etc.
- Knowledge Mobilization – Support KMb activities by translating research findings into accessible formats and languages for diverse audiences.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to juggle multiple projects and shifting priorities.
- Excellent communication skills, including writing, presentation, and verbal abilities.
- Strong collaboration skills, with a focus on equity, empathy, and inclusivity.
- Experience conducting quantitative and/or qualitative research, synthesizing information, and drawing insights.
- Interest in community engagement, co-design, and/or participatory and arts-based research methods.
Bonus if you have
- Experience with design, including digital software skills (e.g., ArcGIS, Adobe suite)
- Experience with knowledge mobilization, strategic communications, data visualization/storytelling
