As part of his undergraduate research, Francesco the studied hot tearing of AZ91D magnesium alloy during permanent mold casting. As he entered his master's and doctorate, his research then moved more towards studying the influence of grain refinement on hot tearing, particularly in B206 Al-Cu alloy and A319 Al-Si-Cu alloy, two of the most common aluminum casting alloys. These alloys' susceptibility to hot tear formation had hindered their use in industrial applications while grain refinement had been shown to minimize the severity of hot tearing in aluminum alloys. The goal of Francesco's research was to understand the underlying mechanisms involved.
