Eli’s research focuses on casting lightweight alloys with improved mechanical and thermal properties for the automotive and aerospace industries. In particular, his graduate research aims to maximize thermal conductivity in aluminum automotive cylinder heads, via an optimization of casting process, alloying additions and heat treatment. This work will enable improvements in the distribution of heat within engine components, thus allowing for low thermal stresses and increased operating temperatures. As a result, enhanced thermal efficiency, fuel economy and component lifetime will be realized in high-quality automotive components. Eli is also involved with several other research projects, including work to improve melt cleanliness and grain refinement in magnesium automotive castings, as well as analysis of solidification kinetics and residual stresses of light alloys components using neutron diffraction.
