Sim-Curious: Exploring the Basics and Impact of Live Actor Simulation

Live actor simulation transforms classrooms into rehearsal spaces for real-world practice. By integrating trained actors into structured, scenario-based learning experiences, educators can create immersive, relational, and high-impact opportunities for students to apply knowledge in emotionally-safe and professionally-authentic contexts: Professional actors engage your team in true-to-life scenarios, delivering immersive, customized simulations to explore interpersonal and professional skills.

This interactive workshop introduces participants to TMU’s Live Actor Simulation Program (LAS) and explores how live actor simulation deepens student learning across disciplines. Participants will gain insight into how the program partners with instructors, faculty, and staff to design meaningful simulation experiences, from initial consultation and scenario development to implementation and student feedback. Revolutionize learning with LAS: we work with you to tailor memorable and impactful experiences to your learning needs.

Attendees will hear directly from TMU faculty who have integrated live actor simulation into their courses and participated in simulations first-hand, as well as from actors who will share perspectives on performance, realism, and feedback. To move beyond description into experience, participants will engage in a brief, facilitated simulation activity.

Grounded in experiential and situated learning principles, this session highlights live actor simulation as a strategy that advances teaching from content transmission to hands-on learning.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Outline initial steps for collaborating with the TMU Live Actor Simulation team to design or pilot a simulation experience
  • Describe the added value and impact of live actor simulation on the learner experience
  • Identify preliminary opportunities within their own courses, programs, or academic units where live actor simulation could enhance learning

This workshop invites educators and staff to move from curiosity to possibility—experiencing firsthand how live actor simulation can reimagine what learning and teaching can feel like.

Presenters

Adam Bailey has been a writer/trainer in TMU's Live Actor Simulation department since 2022 with nearly a decade of additional experience in classrooms as a Live Actor Simulator themselves. They are also an award winning theatre creator and writer, and work as an experiential educator for young learners and people with disabilities.

Greg Morris (she/her) has been a Writer/Trainer with Live Actor Simulation (LAS) since 2022, and has been working in live simulation for thirty years. Prior to joining TMU, she worked in health professions education for 14 years as a Project Manager & SP Educator with the Standardized Patient Program in the Faculty of Medicine at UofT. Greg is a writer and visual artist and was an actor for 22 years (ACTRA/CAEA). While an actor, she discovered the work of live simulation, fell in love with it, and ended up making a career of it.
