Introducing the Global Migration Institute
Migration is one of the defining challenges and opportunities of our time. The Global Migration Institute at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) brings together world-class research and partnerships with scholars, policymakers, and communities to better understand migration and its impacts locally, nationally, and globally.
About The Institute
The Global Migration Institute is Toronto Metropolitan University’s new hub for migration and integration research. Under the leadership of Professor Anna Triandafyllidou, the Institute advances research on key issues including the links between migration and post-migration processes, forced and voluntary mobility, internal and international migration, the role of countries of origin and transit, the intersections of technology and migration, as well as of non-state stakeholders at local, national and international levels, in both migration management and migrant integration.
The Institute builds on the legacy of TMU’s landmark migration initiative, the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration (CERC Migration), one of the most prestigious and well-funded research programs ever awarded in Canada, which elevated TMU to global leadership in migration studies. As this non-renewable program concludes in 2026, its impact and legacy live on within the Global Migration Institute.
Additionally, the important community centred work by the Toronto Metropolitan Centre for Immigration and Settlement (TMCIS) has now been fully integrated into the Institute, ensuring the continuation of its expertise and contributions to migration research.
Finally, the instrumental Bridging Divides: Migrant Integration in the 21st Century, is now housed within the Institute as a core research program advancing innovative approaches to migrant inclusion.
By bringing these initiatives together under one roof, the Global Migration Institute positions TMU as a national and international leader in migration research.
