Pat Crocker
Home Economics ’75
Co-owner and host, Riversong Suites
Riversong Suites is the latest chapter in an impressively varied career for Pat Crocker (external link, opens in new window) , Home Economics ’75. Pat has held roles in education, founded a public relations company specializing in food and consumer accounts, and has written 23 cookbooks. She’s now an AirBnB Superhost alongside her husband, artist Gary McLaughlin.
Their inn, Riversong Suites (external link, opens in new window) , is tucked in the charming village of Neustadt, Ont. and offers guests a boutique escape surrounded by natural beauty and historic charm. Perched on the banks of Meux Creek in Grey County, their establishment features three uniquely designed suites on the top floor of a lovingly restored former grocery store built in 1881.
“We love the village, the Meux Creek, the fact that the mill dam is in our backyard, and now guests can enjoy them,” said Crocker. “With the sound of the water day and night, ‘Riversong’ is central to our brand.” Designed for those seeking tranquility, inspiration and a strong sense of place, Riversong Suites reflects the couple’s passion for hospitality, local culture and the peaceful rhythm of nature.

Jennifer Prince
Hospitality and Tourism ’96
Co-owner and host, Next Door Bed and Breakfast
After more than three decades immersed in Toronto’s vibrant hospitality industry, Jennifer Prince, Hospitality and Tourism ’96, has embarked on a new chapter that combines her professional expertise with her personal passions. As shared in Toronto Met Magazine’s Winter 2024 Class Notes (opens in new window) , Prince recently opened Next Door Bed and Breakfast (external link, opens in new window) in Belleville, Ont. — a dream realized after years of imagining a welcoming space to offer unique culinary and event experiences.
Next Door Bed and Breakfast is nestled in a beautifully restored century home and offers guests not only a cozy place to stay, but also a chance to experience the charm of the Bay of Quinte and nearby Prince Edward County. “We offer exceptional hospitality, providing overnight stays and meals, while creating meaningful connections,” said Prince.
Catering to weekend travellers looking to escape the urban chaos, Prince’s approach blends her love of great food, local tourism and community. With deep knowledge of the region’s hidden gems, she hopes those who stay leave with lasting memories. “Our goal is to offer customized, personalized experiences that ensure each guest feels at ease. We want to foster a deeper appreciation for this region’s unique offerings that we now call home.”

Doug Speare
Theatre Arts ’83
Co-owner and host, Glorious Gardens Bed and Breakfast
For Doug Speare, Theatre Arts ’83, and his wife Anne, opening a bed and breakfast was the realization of a long-held retirement dream — one that took shape sooner than expected. When Doug’s theatre position was eliminated in 2019, the couple found themselves reevaluating their plans. A spontaneous trip to Essex County changed everything. “We came across this part of Ontario by accident and fell in love with it right away,” they shared.
What began as a practical idea to help fund future travel adventures soon transformed into a passion project. Today, Doug and Anne welcome guests to Glorious Gardens Bed and Breakfast (external link, opens in new window) , set along Essex County’s picturesque wine route. Their charming country inn features two cozy guest suites and a complimentary breakfast made from homegrown and locally sourced ingredients. It’s a peaceful escape with all the comforts of home, inviting visitors to slow down and savour life’s simple pleasures.
Whether sipping coffee on the front porch as eagles soar overhead or exploring the region’s wineries, beaches, conservation areas and historic sites, guests experience more than just a restful stay — they discover the heart and soul of Essex County.
