How you can support the next generation of tech entrepreneurs

The DMZ, first started as a student initiative at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), has become the world’s #1 university tech incubator since 2018. From access to investors, industry-leading experts and community events, it has been instrumental in helping startups to scale and succeed as global companies.
While some people may think the DMZ is a place that only students can get involved in, it has several opportunities available for TMU alumni as well. Not only can graduates share their expertise and connections to help startups build their companies, they can also collaborate with entrepreneurs to support their own business needs and expand their networks.
Here are three ways alumni can get involved:
1) Mentorship and coaching
As a TMU graduate excelling in your field, your wealth of knowledge holds immense value for aspiring entrepreneurs. By embracing the mentor role, you can impart your invaluable insights to current startups. Alternatively, you can participate in formal mentorship programs facilitated by the DMZ, where experienced alumni carefully pair with startups based on their specific expertise and industry.
You can also take part in programs such as Basecamp (external link) and Masterclass (external link) , and in diversity initiatives for Black, women, Indigenous and newcomer entrepreneurs. In addition, you can share your industry insights in DMZ Connect (external link) or coach startups at the DMZ’s Workshop Days.
2) Networking
You can leverage your network to facilitate warm introductions for entrepreneurs and open doors that might be challenging to access through traditional channels.
You can also participate in alumni networking events organized by the DMZ, such as the upcoming TMU Alumni in Tech Social on November 23, 2023. These events are great opportunities to reconnect with fellow alumni and expand your professional network.
3) Partnership
The DMZ’s diverse range of programs and partnership opportunities thrive thanks to the support of corporate partners. If your organization stands to gain from collaborating with startups, you can explore potential partnerships or joint projects. These collaborations can create mutually beneficial arrangements, fostering innovation and growth for both parties.
