June 10, 2023

June is National Indigenous History Month (external link, opens in new window) . It is a time for all Canadians to reflect on the unique histories, sacrifices, cultures, contributions and strengths of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples.

Here are some ways to celebrate National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day:

Use this time for self-education and reflection.

TMU’s Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching has highlighted a number of Indigenous teachings on its Indigenous Education page (opens in new window) . Learn about the significance of strawberries and the strawberry moon, water, buffalo, cedar tea and more.

Support Indigenous initiatives across the TMU campus by attending events and sharing event details and links that highlight their work with your network.

For the National Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration on June 21 (opens in new window) , visit an Indigenous vendors showcase in the Student Learning Centre (SLC) amphitheatre from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and enjoy programming on the SLC 8th floor from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A traditional feast will follow.

Visit external resources such as the Government of Canada’s National Indigenous History Month page (external link, opens in new window) .

Support community-based healing and remembrance by donating to small grants through the Na-mi-quai-ni-mak Community Support Fund (external link, opens in new window) .
