Across Canada, April is celebrated as National Poetry Month. The theme chosen for 2021 was resilience. To join in the celebration, we invited alumni to submit their original pieces for us to share. We received one submission from Nathan Santos, Radio and Television Arts ’20. It is a beautiful spoken word poem about his experiences over the past year.

What inspired the poem and spoken word piece?

When I saw that the 2021 poetry theme was resilience and that Ryerson University wanted to hear from their alumni, I knew what I had to do.

Over the past year, I have become more willing to share my spoken word poems. I found solace in this form of expression. As I mentioned in the poem, for some people the pandemic was the worst part, but for others it may have just been one piece in a terrible year. I felt that by sharing my story, maybe someone could relate to it and know that they are not alone.

I felt compelled to point out the difference between resilience and perseverance, and if anyone reading this heard my poem, let this be the takeaway: things will always get better. Even when it feels like you’re alone and you have no one and nothing, please remember YOU ARE RESILIENT and YOU WILL persevere.

What does poetry and creative expression mean to you?

I find that poetry comes from a place of vulnerability, and for a long time I was too shy to share my work publicly. But this year has taught me the peace one can find when they are able to truly express themselves and embrace who they are. If you’re reading this, let this be your sign to take the leap and show people what you can do.

What have you been up to since graduation?

This pandemic took 4 jobs from me that I had lined up post-graduation. I channeled my frustration into growing my content creation, my brand and working in spaces I had never considered before. I’ve been working as a supply teacher at an elementary school in Mississauga since October and I’ve loved every second of it. I also produce a  podcast ‘The Jersey Wall’ with new episodes released every Monday! It’s available wherever you get your podcasts. Resilience

Resilience to me
Defined by the dictionary
To be
The capacity
To recover quickly
From difficulty
You wouldn’t believe
The adversity

I’ve had to endure
The pandemic has just been a piece
In this puzzle of cow manure

But don’t call it a comeback

Let me tell you a story
Of this theme in my life
Over the past 2 years
I saw a man leave his wife

And
yes it was hard
Yeah it makes me sad
My childhood hero
The man that I called dad

But I have this friend
And I know my situation is real
But compared to this guy
I don’t think I have the right to feel

In the same week
I found out my family fell apart
He found out
This planet had one less beating heart

Sometimes my mom’s annoying
but at least she’s around
I can talk to her whenever
His is 6ft underground

Or how about another story
of this other guy
who lived in fear
Because he loved going on late night drives

they told us to stay in
so he rehearsed what to say
if he ever got pulled over
“officer, I’m not dying today”

“I understand the order
So please just see me as a mirage
Because if I’m forced to stay inside
You’ll find me hanging in my garage”

This global catastrophe
It’s been a challenge for us all
And in a weird way
Made other problems seem small

But in another sense
The little problems seem huge
We’re sick of staying in
And being told what to do

But I see a future
Wherein we persevere
One where we can look back
To the time we lived in fear

To the time we spent inside
To the time we wore masks
Knowing this is temporary
But itching for it to be over at last

Perseverance and Resilience
They go hand in hand
one tells the story of the fight
the other of on the feet where you land

and stand
up tall

because you’re coming out of this
and with you is us all

Maybe this pandemic
was the worst part of this
or maybe it was the tip of the iceberg
and you fell into the abyss
but with you WE stand
hand in hand
we’re all in this together
Then, now and forever

On the horizon is warm weather
A sign that things will get better

And you will understand
and recognize you are brilliant
You overcame ALL of this
Because YOU are resilient
