Matt Butko

Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management ’88

Matthew Butko is being recognized this evening with the Outstanding Alumni Volunteer Award. Last year, the University began a new tradition of recognizing alumni who have provided outstanding volunteer assistance to their alma mater. There is no alumnus more deserving of this award than Matt.

The Ryerson Hospitality Alumni Association was formed in 1987, the year before Matt’s graduation from the program. Upon graduation Matt became President and served until 1993, when he left for Vancouver. Luckily for the RHAA, Matt returned to Toronto, and was back as President by 2000.

Under Matt’s leadership, the RHAA has continued to foster and enhance relationships between alumni and students of Ted Rogers School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, through social and educational activities. Highlights include the group’s strategic plan, annual golf tournaments, Alumni Weekend Keynote Breakfasts and support of numerous student bursaries over the years.

Matt has also contributed to the University through his involvement on the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Advisory Council, the Academic Council.

Certainly Matt exemplifies all that is best in a volunteer and a proud Ryersonian. I am pleased to recognize him here tonight as the University’s 2009 Outstanding Alumni Volunteer Award Recipient.
