Dr. Edward Burtynsky
Photographic Arts ’82
At the intersection where the human and natural meet the industrial, Edward Burtynsky creates fascinating art. His photographs have captured such spectacles as the scars of quarries, the stark contrasts of the fluorescent light of tailing ponds flowing over the earth, the staggering sight of ship breakers dismantling the remains of cargo ships, and the displacement of 1.2 million people and 11 cities submerged by waters behind the Three Gorges Dam project in China. Mr. Burtynsky's work shows us the world in new light, challenging us to contemplate the critical issues of the human condition and our impact upon the natural world.
