The war in Ukraine has killed many people, and displaced millions more. Appeals to support displaced Ukrainians in Canada have emerged across our communities, but as the war continues, we know that support is waning.

We are a group of faculty, staff, and students at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) that has come together to identify needs and seek support for Ukrainian students and faculty. In particular, we want current and new Ukrainian international students to be able to continue their studies at TMU.

International tuition fees for these students exceed $30,000 annually, and there are accommodation, food, books, transportation, and other basic living costs, in addition to tuition. We have heard first-hand from many Ukrainian international students that they are financially destitute. In many cases, funds from families in Ukraine are no longer arriving and there is no home in Ukraine for them to return to at this time.

We have established a fund to create emergency bursaries for these students. The Ontario government has recently announced a scholarship for Ukrainian international students, with each university being given a specific number of scholarships to award. TMU is receiving support for four awards – yet we have at least 30 international Ukrainian students at our university. Clearly the need for support exceeds the resources currently available.

Here are some examples of what your financial support can do:

  • $130 will cover a TTC pass for a student for one month
  • $500 will support a student to buy food and personal supplies for one month
  • $1,000 will support a student in a small residence room for one month
  • $3,500 will cover a student’s tuition fees for one month
