Gary joined Toronto Metropolitan University in January 2020 as dean of The Chang School. He is also a professor in The Creative School. Gary’s professional focus is advancing the practice of university-based continuing education, ensuring that it makes a strong contribution to the institution’s strategic goals. He specializes in fostering educational programming that responds to the needs of the various communities served by universities. He has a particular interest in online and lifelong learning.

Prior to joining the university, Gary held academic and administrative leadership positions at several Canadian and international universities. Most recently, he was dean of the Division of Extended Education at the University of Manitoba. Prior to that, he served as director of Academic Programming and Delivery at the University of the West Indies’ Open Campus where he led the development and delivery of online programming to 17 countries of the English-speaking Caribbean. He also helped lead the advancement of continuing education in Canada as president of the Canadian Association for University Continuing Education from 2017-2018.

Gary holds a doctorate in curriculum and instruction from the University of British Columbia. He also earned a Master of Arts degree in Education from Saint Mary's University as well as bachelor’s degrees in science and education from Mount Allison University.
