Funding request form

Apply for funding

The Office of the Provost and Vice-President, Academic supports full-time faculty members in hosting short-term knowledge mobilization initiatives. Funding may be requested to support events including conferences and symposiums, colloquia, fora, summer institutes or other events or outreach activities held on campus that facilitate:

  • Disciplinary and/or interdisciplinary exchanges
  • Scholarly exchanges
  • Intersectoral exchanges between academic researchers and researchers and practitioners from the public, private and/or not-for-profit sectors

These events and activities represent opportunities to exchange knowledge and engage with participants on research issues. Events and outreach activities funded by the Office of the Provost often serve as the first step towards more comprehensive and longer-term projects.

Please complete a brief submission using the Provost’s Office Funding Request Form to request support. Funding is determined on an ongoing, individualized basis, subject to availability.

To be eligible for funding, applicants must:

  • Be a full-time faculty member engaged in SRC activities
  • Have approval and support (preferably with accompanying financial commitment) from the Dean, Chair, or Director of their school/department
  • Be engaged in academic or research activity (such as organizing a conference or event related to SRC)
  • Engage with TMU Global if the activity has an international component

For any issues related to the form, please contact provost@torontomu.ca. For inquiries about funding or existing applications please email Rose.Sandino@torontomu.ca

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Q: Are applications to attend international conferences (e.g., in Asia, Europe) as an invited speaker eligible for funding?

A: Travel is not considered an eligible expense. Professional Expense Reimbursement Fund (PERF) covers conference travel for faculty members. This fund does not.

Budget requests support on-campus workshops, colloquia, conferences, fora, summer institutes or other similar events or outreach activities.

Q: Do the activities have to be held at TMU?

A: Yes, budget requests to support on-campus events, including conferences, symposia, and similar gatherings will be considered.

Q: Are knowledge mobilization activities eligible for funding if they will lead to an international conference, or they are a part of other internationally based activities? (e.g. I am collaborating with two researchers from the University of Amsterdam and I need funding to accommodate their stay and travel at my research lab. The collaboration will lead to a joint conference with the researchers at the University of Amsterdam.)

A: This fund supports on campus activities that include international partners, but travel and accommodation expenses are not covered. The researchers would have to use their grant or other funding for these expenses.

Q:  How much funding can faculty request from the Office of the Provost for conferences, events and knowledge mobilization?

A: Funding decisions are made on an ongoing, individualized basis and are subject to availability. It is intended as seed funding or a supplement, not to fully cover conference costs, with a maximum of $3,000 per request. Please upload a detailed proposal that includes an accurate budget outlining expected costs and funding sources. Be sure to specify contributions from the lead department, school, faculty, or other sources. Applicants are encouraged to secure funding from multiple sources.

Q: Can I apply for this funding to complement existing funds I have received either from elsewhere in the university or externally?

A: Applicants are encouraged to secure funding from multiple sources.

Q: When are funding requests for the new fiscal year due?

A: Funding decisions are made on an ongoing, individualized basis and are subject to availability. Requests must be made for activities that are planned within the same fiscal year (May 1 - April 30) in which the form is submitted. This means that funding for the 2024-2025 fiscal year must be made before April 30, 2025. Successful applicants are asked to wait one year before reapplying for funding.

Q: When should I engage with TMU Global regarding activities with an international component?

A: These funds are for on-campus events, however they may still involve international partners and/or activities. You should engage with TMU Global when your activity involves, for example, hosting an international visiting scholar, establishing an international partnership, or if you would like TMU Global to participate in your event.
