Funding Opportunity

Mitacs (external link)  offers matching funds for organizations (for-profit and non-profit) to support the salary and research costs of highly qualified postdoctoral researchers to lead applied research projects that directly benefit partner organizations.

The Global Migration Institute will work with partners across for-profit and non-profit organizations, municipalities, and hospitals to collaborate on a range of Mitacs-supported research and innovation opportunities to tackle strategic challenges in immigration and settlement. 1. Mitacs Accelerate Global Excellence Award (Application Deadline May 1, 2026)

Collaborate with us to bring world-class international postdocs or Canadian researchers studying abroad to Canada for industrial-based research.

Partner Profile:

  • For-profit (must receive more than 50 percent of their funds from non-government sources) and non-profit organizations, municipalities, and hospitals
  • Those in priority sectors, such as AI, quantum, clean technology, advanced manufacturing, defence, cybersecurity, agri-tech, and health and life sciences
  • Looking for long-term research over the span of 2 years

Funding Scheme (in CAD):

  • Partner contribution: $42,500/year × 2 years
  • Mitacs contribution: $85,000
  • Minimum of $70,000 allocated to stipend and up to $15,000 available for research and relocation expenses
  • Total fellowship value: $170,000

2. Mitacs Accelerate Postdoctoral Fellowship (Ongoing)

Collaborate with us to host a Postdoctoral Fellow in Canada who will drive applied research within your organization.

Partner Profile:

  • For-profit (must receive more than 50 percent of their funds from non-government sources) and non-profit organizations, municipalities, and hospitals
  • Flexible in start dates, looking for a long-term research project over the span of 2 to 3 years
  • Ideal for organizations starting new R&D initiatives

Funding Scheme (in CAD):

  • Partner contribution: $30,000/year 
  • Mitacs contribution: $30,000/year 
  • Total fellowship value: $120,000 (2 years) or $180,000 (3 years)

3. Mitacs Business Strategy Internship (Ongoing)

Co-develop projects that strengthen your business strategy goals, whether in enhancing operations, improving processes, developing new opportunities, or leading innovative solutions in marketing, finance, and intellectual property.

Partner Profile:

  • For-profit (must receive more than 50 percent of their funds from non-government sources) and non-profit organizations, municipalities, and hospitals
  • Those looking for quick-to-launch projects with a ~90% approval rate
  • Ideal for those seeking organizational innovation, planning, and growth

Funding Scheme (in CAD):

  • Your contribution: $5,000 or $7,500
  • Mitacs contribution: $5,000 or $7,500
  • Total project value: $10,000 or $15,000
