The Global Migration Institute and Bridging Divides invite you to a special screening of I Shall Not Hate (2024), followed by a Q&A with the film’s subject, Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish. The Q&A will be facilitated by Anver Saloojee, Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Toronto Metropolitan University.

From Gaza’s Jabaliya refugee camp, to the University of Toronto and the Supreme Court of Israel, I Shall Not Hate follows the uncharted path of Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, The first Palestinian doctor that worked in an Israeli hospital delivering babies, whose ethos of forgiveness and reconciliation is put to the ultimate test when an Israeli tank bombs his house, killing his three daughters. Against all odds, he turns his tragedy into a global campaign to eradicate hate.

Meet the man behind the story. This special screening offers a rare opportunity to see I Shall Not Hate on the big screen and hear directly from Dr. Abuelaish about the experiences that shaped his life and work.

A five-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Dr. Abuelaish is a Scholar of Excellence at the Global Migration Institute and a TMU Honorary Doctor of Laws. He is also an Associate Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

About Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish is a Palestinian-Canadian medical doctor born and raised in the Jabalia Refugee Camp in the Gaza Strip. He studied medicine in Cairo, Egypt, received a diploma in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the University of London and earned a Master of Public Health from Harvard University in 2004.

Known as “the Gaza doctor,” Dr. Abuelaish was the first Palestinian doctor to receive a staff position at an Israeli hospital. His medical work and personal journey inspired his bestselling memoir, I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity.

For decades, he has worked across Israeli and Palestinian communities, grounded in the belief that health can be an engine for peace. His research and advocacy span medicine, mental health, psychology and the social determinants of health, with a particular focus on health as a determinant of peace, hatred as a public health epidemic and the role of women as brokers of health and peace.

Dr. Abuelaish has received numerous awards and accolades, including 14 honorary degrees and five Nobel Peace Prize nominations.

He is currently an Associate Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

The screening takes place one day before It’s About Trust, a special storytelling event at TIFF Lightbox on October 22 exploring the evolving concept of trust, the role of research and science, and the possibility of change.

Dr. Abuelaish will join faculty and alumni from Toronto Metropolitan University for a conversation about trust in the health system, why hope matters and what it takes to build connections across profound divides.

More information about It’s About Trust will be announced soon.
