Meet Mayah Obadia, Geomatics Technician at the Parks Canada office in Iqaluit. A recent graduate with a knack not only for science but also art and design, Mayah brings a combination of technical and creative skills to her role.![]()

As Geomatics Technician, Mayah uses geospatial data to create a variety a printed and digital maps of Nunavut’s parks and places. She collects, analyzes and interprets data gathered through geographic information systems and remote sensing technologies, and presents it in visually engaging ways to convey different types of information. These maps are then used as essential tools for discussions, consultations, science, outreach and much more.
When asked about her favourite part of the job, Mayah said that she enjoys using her creative skills to tell the stories of Nunavut’s parks and places through maps. And as technology evolves, the opportunities to connect people to places through interactive features is opening a whole new world of possibilities.
