During your first year at the School of Business Management, you'll acquire the foundational business knowledge that prepares you to specialize in a major.
Major overview
The Health Services Management (HSM) major prepares students to meet the growing demand for skilled professionals who can manage effectively within the complex Canadian healthcare system. It combines the strengths of the Business Management program with specialized courses in healthcare administration.
Students will gain a solid foundation in core business areas such as finance, marketing, human resources and global management, while developing expertise in health systems, policy, informatics and service delivery. By graduation, students will be equipped with the skills to manage healthcare operations, support policy development and lead organizational change across the healthcare system.

How you earn this degree
Business management students must complete a total of 40 credits which include Required, Required Group or Professional elective, Professionally-Related and Liberal Studies courses. The curriculum provides you with a general overview of business in society, introduces you to all of the basic business functions and develops awareness of social, human and economic issues through the introduction of the liberal studies.
Students complete:
- A common first year in Business Management, then declare the HSM major in second year.
- Core business courses (accounting, economics, law, marketing, statistics, global management).
- Health Services Management courses beginning in the second year, such as Healthcare Systems, Managerial Epidemiology, Health Informatics, Health Economics, Program Planning and Evaluation, and Practicum.
- Experiential learning opportunities through simulations, applied projects and practicum placement and co-op opportunities beginning in the second year.
