The Province of Ontario has introduced new eligibility requirements for IMG positions in the province for the first iteration of the 2026 R-1 Match
The Province of Ontario has determined that eligibility for Ontario-based IMG stream residency positions in the first iteration of the 2026 R-1 Main Residency Match will be limited to international medical graduates who obtained, or are in the process of obtaining, their undergraduate medical degree (MD) abroad and who previously completed at least two years of high school in Ontario. The R-1 first iteration eligibility criteria for Ontario (external link) posted on carms.ca (external link) has been updated to reflect this information.

In July 2025, our School of Medicine will welcome our first cohort of 105 residents. We have partnered with some of the GTA’s leading health systems and organizations to offer a diverse range of residency training sites through our clinical affiliates. Additional partnerships are being established with leading primary care practices in Brampton and surrounding areas.
As with our MD program, our residency programs will be rooted in community-driven care and cultural respect and safety, with EDI and health equity embedded throughout.
