Program information

The Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine's Family Medicine Residency Program received accreditation from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in October of 2024.

TMU’s Family Medicine residency program will train family physicians who are patient-centered, professional and dedicated to improving the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. At TMU, residents will train in a supportive environment emphasizing evidence-based medicine, continuous improvement, lifelong learning and physician wellness.  Residents will learn to provide high-quality, culturally competent care, serve their communities, and ultimately to be leaders in their field.

  • 6/8 Family Medicine blocks are conducted within same community teaching clinic, allowing residents to build long-term relationships with their patients
  • 2/8 Family Medicine blocks are focused on experiencing managing high volume of low-acuity conditions in urgent care or walk-in clinic
  • Rotations in Pediatrics, General Internal Medicine, Mental Health and Addiction Medicine and other relevant specialties
  • Unique Leadership, Education, Advocacy, Research, and Non-Clinical (LEARN) Time program enables residents to tailor their learning experiences and launch their careers

  • 4 weeks: Family Medicine Extracurricular
  • 8 weeks: Rural Medicine / Indigenous Care
  • 8 weeks: Selectives (Outpatient Specialty Clinics and Outpatient Specialty Clinics)

Foundational Curriculum

Our comprehensive, competency-based Foundational Curriculum covers diverse areas including equity, diversity and inclusion in medical care, research strategies, communication skills and patient safety. Our unique LEARN Time program also offers individualized time, space and resources for residents to focus on areas of specialized interest.

Candidates must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada and meet both the basic criteria (external link)  and the Ontario-specific criteria (external link)  in order to apply to the Family Medicine program. International medical graduates (IMGs) are eligible to apply provided they meet all relevant criteria (external link) .

Residents who complete TMU’s Family Medicine program will be eligible to complete the CFPC Certification Examination in Family Medicine.

The TMU School of Medicine currently has clinical partnerships with multiple major training sites: 

Residency training will leverage a distributed model which may include training at any of these sites for learning in environments, which include community and clinical settings, urban and rural environments, and inpatient and outpatient settings. While the majority of resident training will be focused in Peel and surrounding communities, additional learning experiences may take place at other training sites within Canada through Inter-University Affiliation Agreements. These agreements are subject to change and result in training at sites other than those that are listed above.


Travel to various locations will be required. Access to a personal vehicle will be beneficial; however, anyone with access to a reliable means of transportation is also encouraged to consider this program.ns.

How to Apply

Applications to the Family Medicine program are only accepted through CaRMS. All applicants will be notified through CaRMS Online and TMU will send email invitations directly to applicants selected for an interview.

Note that three Family Medicine Structured Reference Letters are required with your application.
