Priority vs. Open Enrolment, what is the difference?

Priority Enrolment

Students are given their own online Priority Enrolment Appointment based on the year of study. The Office of the Registrar at TMU will assign a specific date range in which you can add, swap, drop classes for the upcoming term. 

You may begin adding/swapping/dropping classes as soon as your enrolment appointment begins on MyServiceHub. Login to MyServiceHub and choose “Enrolment Dates” to confirm your Online Priority Enrolment Appointment date.

Open Enrolment

The open enrolment period usually runs during the first two weeks of the semester. During this period all students, regardless of the year they are in their program may make changes to their class schedule (add, drop, swap courses).

You may add courses outside of your degree requirements during this period (i.e. courses going towards a Minor). 

The Course You Want is Full?

Once the enrolment period begins, Student Advisors have the exact same access to courses that students do. There is no magic backdoor; if a course is full, we cannot get you in. It's not that we don't want to help you, it's that we can't help you.

Here are some suggestions on what to do:

 Select a Backup Course

Look to see if there is an alternative course you can take. If it's a Liberal Studies or Open Elective, look to see what alternative course options are running in that term. Be as flexible as you can.

It is always best to get into a backup course and then switch out if a space opens up in the course that you want, rather than run the risk of being left with no course at all. 

 Waitlists

Not all courses offer a waitlist option, but a lot do! If there is a waitlist, get yourself on to it, and as people drop the course, you will move up the list.

Make sure you understand how waitlists work, as every year people try to put themselves onto a waitlist for a course that they are already in!

Waitlists are not for swapping sections - they are there to help students get into a course they are NOT yet in. 

Enrolment Tips

Here are some helpful tips to following during your enrolment period:

  1. If you have to make any changes to your class schedule, it’s best to SWAP and not DROP. This way you’ll keep your seat, until you’re successfully enrolled in the new class. 
  2. If a class is full closed icon, continue to check course availability and spaces on MyServiceHub. During the first two weeks of school we see the most movement in courses (classes open and close).
  3.  If a class has a Wait List functionality wait list, you may add yourself to the Wait List. You can be on the Wait List for a maximum of two classes per term.
  4. After enrolling, view your schedule to confirm that the course(s) have been added and appears. 
  5. Make sure the courses you choose are part of the program’s curriculum.
  6. Consult your Academic Advisement Report when selecting courses. Check the “Non-Applicable” section of your Academic Advisement Report. Courses in this section will not count towards your graduation requirements. As always, you may always contact your Student Advisor with any questions you may have.
