In Commemoration of Orange Shirt Day: Seeking a sense of community and solidarity while remaining remote
Director's Message
We are participating in the recognition of Orange Shirt Day to raise awareness about the residential school system in Canada. In recognizing residential schools, we are honouring the survivors of the residential school system. Wearing orange shirts on this day reminds us of the impact that residential schools have on the lives of survivors, families, and communities today. Phyllis Webstad still remembers the new orange shirt that her grandmother bought for her when she was six years old (external link) .
Residential schools in Canada were part of Canada’s official policy that aimed to eliminate Indigenous Peoples’ languages and cultures (external link) . Orange Shirt Day is an opportunity for us to discuss the historical and present-day impacts of residential schools. It honours the voices and lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples and affirms the commitment that every child matters.
