By the Numbers: Training the Next Generation of Family Doctors
Recognizing World Family Doctor Day
April 22, 2026
Primary care is the backbone of our health care system, focused on prevention, continuity and person-centred care. Each year on World Family Doctor Day (May 19), we recognize the impact of family physicians on the health of our community.
The need is urgent. In Ontario, 1.98 million people are without a regular health care provider. In Peel Region alone, that number is projected to reach 430,000 in 2026.
At TMU’s School of Medicine, we’re training future family doctors from the community, for the community—backed by real impact:
Training Focus
- 54% of residency spaces are dedicated to family medicine and enhanced skills
Our Learners
- 91 learners in family medicine:
- 47 current postgraduate trainees
- 44 incoming residents
Where They Learn
- 107 sites primary care training locations across Peel Region
Expanding Access to Care
- 16 enhanced skills graduates completing training in June 2026 and entering into independent practice
- 14,000+ patients in Brampton gaining access through TMU’s new Integrated Health Centres
- 100,000+ visits annually projected as the clinic network expands

From expanding clinic access to training future physicians, TMU’s School of Medicine is building a model rooted in community care, for the community.
