Our director, Dr. Deborah Fels, has had 30 years of research experience building and evaluating computer-based technology for supporting the needs of people with disabilities with over 160 academic publications (external link) . Her research interests include: inclusive technologies, inclusive media, inclusive design, people with disabilities and healthcare systems for older adults.

A faculty member of the ITM program, Dr. Fels has won numerous awards for her work including, most recently, the YSGS Outstanding Contribution to Graduate Education Award, the Collaborative Research Award (Ryerson), Dr. Margaret R. Pfanstiehl Memorial Achievement Award-Research and Development in Audio Description from the American Council of the Blind.

Dr. Fels also continues to serve on the boards for various accessible media companies and is currently the Co-Chair of the Body of Knowledge Group, consulting with the American Council of the Blind in creating an AD certification process (since April 2019). As the Co-chair of the Young Researchers Consortium (since 2000) and program committee member of Europe’s largest accessibility conference, the ICCHP, she is responsible for ensuring young researchers have access to opportunities in the field of accessibility.

Dr. Amira Ghenai is an Assistant Professor at Ted Rogers School of Information Technology Management at Toronto Metropolitan University. Prior to this, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the School of Information Studies and a member of the Accessible Computing Technologies Research Group (ACT Lab) at McGill University.

Amira completed her PhD of Computer Science at the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, University of Waterloo. She also received a Masters of Computing Sciences in Software Engineering from the University of Imperial College London.

Her research interests include information retrieval, social media analysis, machine learning, misinformation, and accessibility for older adults. More specifically, she is interested in the research question of how search and social media interactions affect the human behavior in health-related decision-making process. Funded by AGEWELL - Canada's technology and aging network, she also worked on addressing the accessibility barriers faced by older adults when exploring the online health-related content.

Amira has well-established research track record with notable conference publications (such as ACM CSCW, ACM CHIIR, and ACM ICTIR). She further served as program committee member and reviewer for top-tier conferences and journals (such as JMIR, ACM CSCW, AAAI ICWSM,and ACM WWW).
