Changes at the D+TL this Fall
Starting this September, the Design + Technology LAB will be implementing some changes to our material offerings and operations. Read through the changes below so that you know how these might affect your work.
1- We are changing our standard material sizes
All materials offered through the Lab will now be available in:
- 12" x 12"
- 12" x 24"
We will also make it easier for you to submit full sheet layouts in case that is more efficient for the work you need to cut.
We have created new templates to accomodate these new sizes:
- One file with a 12" x 12" and 12" x 24" artboard
- One file with a 4' x 8' template
2- We are increasing our per minute rate
In order to keep up with rising costs, we will be raising our rates from $.42/min to $.45/min- which works out to $27.5 per hour. This adjustment will affect all work that includes any time tracking: laser cutting, CNC milling, flatbed printing etc.
3-Now offering Illustration Board
Illustration board will now be a standard material available through our service bureau.
Our illustration board is 1.4mm thick and comes with one black side and one white side. Please note that the white side, will most likley show scorching from the laser cutting process and smoke marks. We will not be able to promise pristine white material.
This new material will only be available in the following two sizes:
- 12" x 12"- $2.05
- 12" x 24" - $4.10
4-No more MDF
We are discontinuing the use of MDF at the D+TL. This means you will not be able to select it as a material to purchase through the service bureau and you will not be able to bring in your own for the purpose of laser cutting.
We are moving away from MDF as it is not a great material for laser cutting; neither for the health of our staff and the longevity of our machines.
5-Now accepting 3MF files
We will now accept print-ready bambu studio files! These files will allow you to fine tune settings and include multiple models in one layout. Please be sure to read our how to guide before submitting.
6-Open Lab 3 Days a week!
We will be available for drop in questions and support 3 days a week.
- Mondays from 9am to 5pm
- Wednesdays from 12pm to 5pm
- Fridays from 9am to 12pm
See you in the Lab!
