Learning Support (SLLS)
Student Life and Learning Support (SLLS) helps you get the most out of your university experience by providing learning support, leadership opportunities, peer mentoring, social connections, and activities. Learning supports are available for all full-time and part-time students, including the Chang school.
What's Available?
Math and Computer Science Support
Math and Computer Science Support helps you grow your skills through a variety of programs and tutoring services. Appointments are 15-30 minutes in length.
To book an appointment:
- View a list of courses tutors can support with on the (google doc) Math & Computer Science Tutoring Schedule (external link) .
- Go to Torontomu.ca/sls > select Booking Tool under Quick Links > sign in with your username and password > select Math Support.
- Select Online Tutoring and/or Hybrid Tutoring (the hybrid tutoring option allows students to choose an in-person or an online session).
Peer Academic Coaching
Meet with a Peer Academic Coach to create study plans, and work on time management, focus, motivation, strategic reading, exam preparation, and note-taking.

Supported Learning Groups
Supported Learning Groups meet throughout the week to discuss course-specific topics in a peer-to-peer learning environment, to support your academic success. Appointments are available virtually on Google Meet, or in-person. In-person appointments take place in the SLC 4th floor. Please check in at the front desk upon arrival.
Learning Skills Appointments
Learning skills appointments are offered by TMU's Academic Engagement Specialist in the Spring/Summer semester and by referral. These appointments help you improve skills such as time management, motivation, focus, presentations and more.

Study Lounge & Low Sensory Hours
The Study Lounge is located at SLC 451, and provides you with a quiet space to work and study. It also offers low-sensory study hours with dim lighting, fidget items, snacks, and Peer Academic Coaching. Check the schedule for updated hours.
Workshops
SLSS Workshops are focused around a variety of topics related to writing, language, study skills, and transition support, to help you succeed.
TMU Tutor Match
TMU Tutor Match helps qualified students find paid work as tutors. It also supports students who are looking for individualized and course specific support by helping them find and hire a tutor.

Writing & Language Support
Writing appointments give you one-on-one support at any stage in the writing process. You can discuss your writing, ask questions, and get thoughtful, critical feedback that will help you move forward. There are appointments available specifically for:
- English speaking and listening
- Grammar/supported self-editing
- Academic writing
- Oral presentation practice
There are also drop-in writing appointments offered online and in-person.
Conversational Connections
A program that supports students who use English as an additional language, where they get paired with a volunteer aged 60+ to practice their conversational English skills one-on-one while gaining an appreciation of intergenerational differences.
English Language Test Prep Sessions
One-on-one support for students preparing for a standardized English language assessment, e.g. IELTS, CELPIP, TOEFL.
Writing & Language Weekly Group Sessions and Non-Credit Classes
Weekly group sessions are designed to help you develop your writing and English language skills through English Conversation Groups, English Communication Support classes, and the Writing Studio.
Graduate Student Support
SLLS offers services for Master's or PhD students. You can book individual appointments to discuss research papers, grant applications, thesis and dissertations or join one of the programs listed below.
Coffee and Writing Group
A weekly group for graduate students wishing to have a quiet environment where they are supported through their writing blocks with prompts from a skilled writing coach.
Write-a-Thon
The Write-a-thon will provide a quiet and productive writing environment for participants to focus on their writing projects. Great for making a dent on a dissertation or MRP, or even a piece meant for publication. We will set writing goals as a group and write in timed intervals. Additionally, graduate-level writing support will be available to support participants. Offered toward the end of Winter semester.
Graduate Level Appointments
One-on-one support for graduate students with academic writing, research, grant applications, dissertation writing, and more.
Graduate Workshops
Graduate workshops are broken into two parts, with a) Instructional (Theory) and b) Peer-review (Practice), focusing on topics such as writing a literature review, creating an outline for a long form paper, writing about research methods and more.
Graduate Writing and Research Institute
A two day learning institute with students, scholars and faculty, where you learn skills to succeed as a graduate student including research, writing, research proposals, literature reviews and more. Offered in the Fall semester.
Dissertation/MRP Coaching
Dissertation coaches help graduate students with their PhD dissertation or Master’s MRP by providing writing strategies, goal setting, organization help, and accountability and support throughout their writing process.
